The month-by-month guide

Bali is one of the few destinations in the world where you can surf all year round. But the conditions change from one month to the next, and especially from one season to the next. Knowing when to go surfing in Bali means maximizing your chances of finding waves suited to your level, with fewer crowds in the water. Here is the month-by-month guide.

Can you surf in Bali all year round?

Yes, and that is precisely what makes the island's strength. Bali has two differently exposed coastlines: the west coast (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, the Bukit Peninsula) and the east coast (Nusa Dua, Sanur, Keramas).

When the wind blows in the wrong direction, onshore on one coast, it blows in the right direction on the other. As a result, there is almost always a spot working somewhere on the island, regardless of the time of year. Moreover, the water stays between 27 and 29 °C twelve months a year, so no wetsuit is needed.

The real question is therefore not whether there will be waves, but which ones, and where.

The dry season, from April to October

This is the most famous and busiest period. The prevailing winds come from the southeast and blow offshore on the west coast, smoothing out the waves and making them hollower and better formed. The Indian Ocean swell is also more powerful and more consistent.

Key takeaways:

Optimal conditions all along the west coast, from Kuta to the Bukit

More consistent swell, especially from June to August

Lots of sun and very little rain

The world underwater, especially in July and August

For beginners, nothing beats the mornings. The wind rarely picks up before late morning, which leaves better-formed waves. Sandy-bottom beaches like Legian remain accessible even when the swell rises, provided you have good supervision.

The rainy season, from November to March

She has a bad reputation, often undeserved. The winds reverse and come from the northwest, making the east coast excellent this time. Nusa Dua, Sanur, and Keramas take over and offer very good conditions.

Key takeaways:

The East Coast is becoming the best option

The swell is generally more modest, making it more accessible to beginners.

Rains most often fall at the end of the day or at night, while mornings remain mostly clear

Much fewer people in the water and cheaper accommodation

This period is often underestimated. For someone who is just starting out and looking for gentle waves without the crowd, it has real advantages.

The month-by-month guide

January and February. Peak of the rainy season. Heading to the east coast, with waves often small to medium. Very few people, low prices. A good time for a first lesson.

Mars. Transition. The rains become less frequent and both coasts can work depending on the day. A calm and pleasant period, still uncrowded.

April. One of the best months of the year. The dry season starts, the west coast wakes up, and the high tourist season has not started yet. An excellent compromise for all levels.

May. Very good conditions on the west coast, swell gradually increasing, crowds still reasonable. Very good month to progress.

June, July and August. The peak of the season. The most powerful swell of the year, intermediate and advanced spots at their best. It is also the busiest period, both in the water and on the beach. Beginners surf at protected spots, chosen according to the day's conditions.

September and October. Our favorite time of year. Dry season conditions are still excellent, but the summer crowds have left and accommodation prices are going back down. The best value, peace, and budget of the year.

November and December. Gradual return of the rainy season and shift toward the east coast. More accessible waves, quiet atmosphere, except for the year-end holidays which bring in crowds and warmth to the heart, even for surfers! The opportunity to dress up as Santa Claus on his board 😉

Which period to choose according to your level?

You are a beginner. Almost the entire year is suitable, provided you surf in the right place. The rainy season and the transition months offer gentler waves and fewer crowds, which is comfortable for learning. In the middle of the dry season, sandy-bottom spots remain perfectly suited, with guidance that remains completely appropriate, provided you surf at the right time and on the right beach.

You already have a few sessions under your belt. April, May, September, and October are your best allies: real well-formed waves, without the summer surf crowd density.

You already surf well... or even super well! June, July, and August concentrate the most powerful swell and the spots of the Bukit Peninsula in their best version.

In any case, skill level matters more than schedule. The right reflex is to choose the formula suited to your level, and then let the choice of the spot be made day by day depending on the conditions.

The factor that everyone forgets: the tide

In Bali, the tide changes everything. An excellent surf spot at high tide can become unrideable three hours later, and vice versa. This is particularly true for the island's many reef breaks.

Consult the swell forecasts Before leaving, get a good general idea, but local experience remains irreplaceable to know which spot works at what time on a given day.

That is exactly what the Bali Ocean Surf team does before every session: the surf spot is chosen on the same day based on the swell, wind, tide, and the group's level, and round-trip transportation from your accommodation is included. You always surf where conditions are best, leaving nothing to chance or unexpected surprises.

So, when should I book?

If only one thing had to be remembered: there is no bad time to surf in Bali, only different times. April, May, September, and October offer the best balance between conditions, crowds, and budget. Summer concentrates the most powerful swell. And the rainy season holds some very pleasant surprises on the east coast, far from the crowds.

Once you have chosen your dates, all that is left is to know where to put your board. For this, discover the best spots for beginners and come surf with the Bali Ocean Surf team: certified French-speaking instructors, a maximum ratio of 1 instructor to 3 students, and the best spot of the day, all year round!
